place of birth : Largs, Scotland

Golfing institution, competing and winning in events for 3 decades.

Reached another milestone in his career in 2004 when he won the Travis Perkins Senior Masters at Wentworth Club his first victory in the senior ranks. Triumphed by firing a ten under par 62 in the final round over the Edinburgh Course which, at the time, matched the lowest round carded on the European Seniors Tour. It was a hugely satisfying victory as it came a short time after he announced he had decided to stop playing in America and focus on playing in Europe so that he could spend more time with his family. Added a second victory in 2005 when he won the Irvine Whitlock Seniors Classic at La Moye, 14 years after having won over the same venue on The European Tour.

Captained the European Ryder Cup Team to victory in The 34th Ryder Cup at The De Vere Belfry, 17 years after holing the winning putt at the same venue which ended a 28 year drought in the event. Became the first golfer in European Tour history to notch up 600 tournaments in the 1998 Trophée Lancôme. Started under guidance of his father, Bob his one and only coach at Rossendale in Lancashire before his father returned to Scotland at Largs in Ayrshire. Left school at 13, turned professional at 16, started out on Tour aged 17 and took nine events to make first cut.

Won events in the last three decades, the most recent of his 21 European Tour titles being Peugeot Open de France in 1998 after hitting a seven wood stiff at the 71st hole. An early pioneer of the broom handle putter. Awarded MBE in 1996 for services to golf and the OBE in the 2003 New Year Honours List for his inspired Captaincy of Europe's Ryder Cup Team. Won the team event at the 2003 dunhill links championship at St Andrews in partnership with his son Daniel.
